15 Years After B.I.G’s Reign, Where’s Hip Hop Today?

notorious b.i.g.

Love it or hate it, Hip Hop music has taken over.

Maybe you view it as a genre of music that promotes misogyny and debases wholesome American culture. Or perhaps you regard it with optimism and excitement, embracing it as a genuinely important medium for expressing the voices and experiences of younger generations.

Either way, the truth is, Hip Hop is no longer “underground” or “urban,” it’s bonafide pop. And it rules.

In fact, we can now count two generations who have never known life without hop hop music– a distinction shared with an elite list of technological advances, such as the Internet, cell phones, microwaves and cable television.

Since its birth in the late 70s, spanning more than 30 years until today, Hip Hop has morphed and taken off into a hundred different directions, further spreading its influence and power to billions more young people around the world.

Nate Dogg Remembered One Year Later

What Happened To Nate Dogg

By Rob Markman, with reporting by Rahman Dukes

One year ago to the day (March 15), hip-hop suffered a great loss when singer Nate Dogg died due to complications from multiple strokes. Nate was a pivotal figure in the West Coast’s dominating G-Funk sound in the 1990′s, and his closest friends and collaborators still feel his impact.

He added deep and soulful melodies to many hit records, notably appearing alongside Dr. Dre and his childhood friends Snoop Dogg and Warren G. Who could forget his bass-heavy bellows on Warren’s 1994 hit “Regulate” or Dre’s 2000 club banger “The Next Episode”? Not his fans, and surely not his loved ones.

Last year, MTV News took a trip out to Nate’s old stomping grounds in Long Beach, California, and made a pilgrimage to the store World Famous V.I.P. Records. While there, we got reactions from some who knew the singer best. Read on and be sure to click on the embedded video for an exclusive clip.

A co-founder of Jay Z’s Roc-a-Fella Records pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiracy to distribute more than 100 kilograms of marijuana.
Kareem Burke aka Biggs, 38, faces at least five years in prison.    Under his plea agreement, Burke must also forfeit $660,000, his residence in North Bergen, N.J., $15,000 cash seized from his residence, and his 2010 BMW.   U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain will deliver the sentence on May 18, 2012, at noon.   Burke was arrested along with at least 50 people in late 2010 as authorities brought down three separate but interconnected marijuana trafficking cells. At least 10 have entered guilty pleas to date.

Much of the groups’ marijuana originated in Florida, but prosecutors say Burke obtained some of his product from California growers.  Officers who searched Burke’s New Jersey home allegedly located the remains of a marijuana-growing operation.
